How do I add a note to an item for the kitchen?

Adding free-text instructions such as "no onions" to an item, so they print on the kitchen ticket.

Notes let you add an instruction to an item that isn't covered by its modifiers, such as "no onions" or "sauce on the side". The note appears under the item on the order and prints with it on the kitchen ticket.

On the iPad

  1. Ring up the item, then tap it on the order.

  2. Tap Add Note.

  3. Type the note and tap Done.

The note applies to every unit in that line, so if the line is 2 x Burger, both burgers get the note. To add a note to just one, ring it up separately. To delete a note, swipe left on it and tap Delete.

On Seamless Pocket (handhelds)

  1. Ring up the item, tap the total bar to open the order, then tap the item.

  2. Tap Add Note. If there's more than one of that item, choose Just This One or All (the button shows how many).

  3. Type the note and tap + to add it. You can add several notes this way, and tap the cross next to a note to remove it.

  4. Tap Done.

On Seamless on Android

Tap the item on the order, then follow the same steps as Seamless Pocket from Add Note onwards.

Common questions

Should I use a note or a modifier? If staff type the same instruction often, such as "well done" or "no ice", set it up as a modifier in the back office instead. Modifiers are quicker to tap, can carry a price, and keep tickets consistent.

I added a note after the item was sent. Notes print with the item, so a note added after the item has gone to the kitchen won't be printed. Let the kitchen know directly.

Can I send the kitchen a message that isn't about one item? On the iPad, yes, with layout buttons. In the back office, add a Kitchen Instruction or Mains Away button to a till layout. These print straight away when print routing is set up and the route has Print kitchen instructions turned on. Mains Away asks Send Mains Away? and prints the time on the ticket. These buttons aren't available on the Android apps yet.
