A powerful but sometimes slightly confusing concept is portions. This useful tool allows the modification of a products stock keeping unit by size without the need for creation of multiple products. A good example of this is Draught beer which may be served in half pint, schooner or full pint or wine which may be sold by the glass as small, medium and large. Coffee is also an applicable use case where americano might be sold in small, medium, large. This really comes into play for those users wishing to share the EPOS reporting with a stock control tool that is working at ingredient level.
Unlike modifiers, you dont need to do any product setup before beginning to create a portion. Just head to the back office area and select portions from the drop down menu.
Give your portion a name, here we have used ‘wine’ for the name, so we can then apply it to all wines sold by the glass. We’ve then created some descriptive names for each portion size that the wine will be sold in. That’s it, the price modification is all set up in the product area.
In the normal product setup wizard simply select the portion you have created, in this case ‘wine’.
On the next step you will give each portion size a price and select the correct tax rate. If you have take-out pricing enabled then you can also set prices for the portion sizes here.
So how does this look on the iPad app? You can see the pop up and how an example appears in the ring up on the left.
Here’s how the use of portions flows into the back office reports
So whether its a half portion of food, a 20oz latte or a schooner of beer you now have a tool which can modify the price of the item for each case without the need to create multiple products for each size.
